Let us properly prepare you for an unforgettable nature experience in Sweden’s largest archipelago, with every practical aspect taken care of.
The Self-guided Kayak Expedition is a 5-8 day self-guided kayak & wildcamping tour that offer freedom to explore independently with everything needed for a great kayak and wild camping experience. We start with a thorough half-day introduction covering safety, navigation, sustainability and personalised route planning, plus provide top-quality gear and maps.
5-8 days enables you to really paddle out and experience the outer archipelago with all its gems. Paddle to remote wilderness saunas, camp on uninhabited islands, or visit charming villages. Explore Nämdöskärgården National Park or combine kayaking with hiking along the Stockholm Archipelago Trail. With our point-to-point expedition service between our kayak centres, you can journey further without retracing your route. A guide remains available 24/7 by phone.
About our kayaks. Our standard kayak for the tour is a tandem kayak (for 2 people) that packs a lot, is stable and beginner friendly. If uneven number in your group, you will be provided with one stable single kayak for the odd-one-out in addition to the tandem kayak(s). Experienced paddlers may request our more advanced single kayaks via the booking form.

Pick-up. We collect you at 9.15 am on your first day from central Stockholm for a 45-minute drive to our kayak centre, located as far into the archipelago as accessible by car. Please note the starting time is fixed for this tour.
Introduction Session. Upon arrival, our guides will welcome you and you start by getting to know each other a bit. You’ll repack your belongings into dry bags, load your kayaks and get all the knowledge you need for the tour:
- Archipelago map overview
- Camping, kayak and food equipment
- Packing your kayak
- Navigation and weather planning
- Safety procedures
- The Swedish Public Right of Access (Right to roam)
- Sustainable travel, including bird protection and nature reserves
- Detailed (personalised) route planning for each group of guests
Once ready, you’ll head out onto the water for a 3-8 day kayak & wild camp expedition!
Return and Drop-off. Return to the kayak centre by approximately 2.30 pm on your final day to unpack and shower before the transfer back to the city. The transfer departs at 3.30 pm, arriving in the city around 4.30 pm.
If you need to return earlier, reliable public transport is available, or we can pre-book a taxi. Please discuss this with us beforehand.

We recommend packing the following items:
- Some changes of comfy outdoor clothes (depending on length of tour)
- Shell layer; wind/waterproof jacket and pants for land use. Waterproof kayak jacket and neoprene gloves for kayaking are included.
- A warm sweater and light jacket and hat if the night gets cold
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, sun cap and water bottle
- Swim wear and towel
- A power bank (or two!) to be able to charge your smartphone. You will use it for navigation.
- Sleep mask (it can be very light at night!)
- A book to read, a deck of cards and other personal items
- Tick remover (we do have Ticks in Stockholm archipelago)
- If you do not add the food package: Food for the duration of your trip

- All participants must be able to swim 200 metres unaided.
- Minimum age 18 years. If accompanied by adult, 12 years of age (1 adult per child, in a tandem kayak)
- This experience is suitable for both beginners and experienced kayakers, we recommend moderate fitness level.
- We recommend a TBE vaccination (protects against TBE: Tick-borne encephalitis) as we do have Ticks in the archipelago and some of them carry the TBE virus.

- This experience is not suitable for those with mobility limitations due to the wild nature and difficult terrain. If in doubt, please consult with us!

- 5-day food packages available to add via the booking form.
- Choose between vegetarian or regular options. For special dietary requirements, please contact us before your trip.
- Tours longer than 5 days include a route passing an island shop for replenishment.

- Add this in the booking form for free cancellation until 24 hours before tour (otherwise 30 days before tour)

If you have added our flexibility booster/cancellation insurance to your booking (which we recommend), you may cancel your booking with a full refund, or reschedule the trip at your convenience up until 24 hours before the start of the trip, for any reason. You can cancel/reschedule the whole booking or part of the booking.
If you have not added the cancellation insurance, the following applies: If you cancel a tour 30 days or more before the start date you will receive a 100% refund. If you cancel a tour 29 days – 14 days before the start date you will receive a refund of 80 % but will pay 20 % (your initial deposit payment). If you cancel your trip less than 14 days before the start of the tour you will not receive a refund, but you might still be able to get compensation through your home- or travel insurance company.
You can always rebook your tour until 14 days before the tour to another date same season provided that we have availability on that date. Give us a ring or e-mail and we will help you out!
