THREE WAYS TO EXPLORE THE STOCKHOLM ARCHIPELAGO BY KAYAK
The Kayak Trail is a full-service provider. We offer three kayak tours in the Stockholm Archipelago, each built around the same philosophy: we handle transfers, equipment, food, guide support, and planning so you can simply show up and enjoy the experience.
Kayak Short Break
A shorter self-guided kayak tour in the Stockholm Archipelago. The same equipment, service, and wild camping experience as our expedition, with a route tailored to a long weekend. Ideal if you want a taste of archipelago life without committing to a full week.
Kayak Expedition
Our flagship self-guided kayak expedition in the Stockholm Archipelago. Five to eight days of paddling, wild camping, and island-hopping through the outer archipelago. Enough time to reach the Nämdöskärgården National Park and truly disconnect.
3-Day Kayak & Wild Camp
A guided kayak and wild camping tour in the Stockholm Archipelago for groups of 2 to 6. Your guide paddles with you, cooks all meals, and takes you to the best spots. The most immersive way to experience the archipelago if you prefer a guide by your side.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR KAYAK TOUR IN THE STOCKHOLM ARCHIPELAGO
Every kayak tour with The Kayak Trail follows a carefully designed journey. Here is what happens from the moment you book to the moment you are back in Stockholm.
We make your planning easy
We keep track of the equipment, weather considerations, and all the logistics. After you book, we will let you know what to bring and where we pick you up. All you need to do is book, pack, and arrive. You are in good hands.
If you have any questions along the way, we are just a phone call or email away.
We pick you up in Stockholm
On the morning of your departure, we pick you up at Hotel Downtown Camper by Scandic in central Stockholm (Brunkebergstorg 9). You do not need to find your own way to the archipelago. We drive you directly to our kayak centre at Stavsnäs Vinterhamn, about an hour from the city.
When your tour is over, we bring you back to Stockholm the same way. Pick-up at 09:15, return by 17:00 at the latest. If you need a different time to fit your travel itinerary, please let us know and we will do our best to find a solution.
We prepare you at the kayak centre
At Stavsnäs, you meet your personal guide for a thorough half-day introduction. This is not a quick briefing. It is a proper preparation session that covers everything you need to feel confident on the water and in the wild.
Your guide will learn about your group: your experience level, interests, and what kind of trip you are looking for. Based on this, we help you choose the right route through the Stockholm Archipelago. Whether you want to reach the Nämdöskärgården National Park, hike sections of the Stockholm Archipelago Trail, or simply find the most secluded islands, we plan it with you.
The introduction begins with a Swedish fika (coffee or tea and a treat) and includes kayak technique, safety orientation, route planning with maps, navigation tools, camping skills, cooking with your equipment, sustainability and the Right of Public Access, and bird protection in the archipelago.
By the time you set out, you will know your kayak, your route, your equipment, and the waters you are heading into.
We equip you with quality gear from trusted outdoor brands
You do not need to own or bring any kayaking or camping gear. We provide all of it.
In Sweden, we have a long tradition of creating great outdoor equipment. On our tours, you will be equipped with gear from Swedish heritage outdoor brands such as Haglöfs, Trangia, Primus, Silva, Urberg Skandinavien, and Light My Fire, as well as international brands such as Exped. Our tours are an invitation to experience what quality outdoor equipment can do to enhance the comfort of a multi-day stay in nature. Equipment from trusted brands ensures that your gear is not only comfortable, but strong and sturdy enough to handle anything the weather might bring.
The weather in the Stockholm Archipelago is normally fair and beautiful. However, it can change quickly. A sunny morning can turn into a rainy and windy afternoon. By evening, it often clears up again, and on the freshly washed cliffs you can enjoy a long Scandinavian sunset. It is all part of the charm, and our gear is selected to keep you comfortable through every shift.
Adjustments can always be made to suit your preferences. For example, if you would like one tent per person or an extra cooking stove, just let us know. If you have plenty of previous kayaking experience, we also offer the option of a single kayak. Please contact us after booking for a consultation.
You simply arrive with your outdoor clothes and personal items. We take care of the rest.
We feed you well
On our self-guided kayak tours, you can add a food package with all meals and plenty of snacks for the entire trip. The food package comes with recipe cards so you can cook proper meals on your camping stove, even on a remote island. A sea kayak can carry far more than a hiking backpack, so the food is generous.
On our guided 3-day kayak and wild camp tour, all meals are included. Your guide cooks for the group, and meals are a highlight of the experience.
We support you throughout your tour
On our self-guided kayak tours, you have access to our 24/7 guide phone for the entire trip. If the weather changes, if you want advice on your route, or if anything unexpected happens, our guides are a phone call away. You are on your own adventure, but you are never without backup.
On our guided tour, your guide is with you the entire time.
We welcome you back
When you return to the kayak centre at Stavsnäs, you can use our showers, toilets, and sauna before the drive back to Stockholm. Your luggage and belongings will be waiting for you in our secure storage, labelled with your name, exactly where you left them.
Then we drive you back to central Stockholm. All you need to do is enjoy the ride and start planning your next trip.

No previous experience is required. Every kayak tour begins with a thorough introduction session covering kayak technique, safety, navigation, and route planning. Our guides make sure you feel confident before you set out. The Stockholm Archipelago has no tides, no ocean currents, and no large swells, which makes it a safe and accessible destination for kayaking.

The self-guided kayak short break (3 to 4 days) and the self-guided kayak expedition (5 to 8 days) include the same equipment, service, and guide introduction. The difference is the duration and how far you can go. The expedition gives you enough time to reach the Nämdöskärgården National Park and explore more remote parts of the Stockholm Archipelago. The short break is ideal for a long weekend or a first taste of archipelago kayaking.
-
